Harry Belafonte's version of "Don't Ever Love Me" is iconic and without easing off the dreamy exotica vibes one bit, Sundae + Mr. Goessl's version has a unique perspective that adds charm and whimsey galore. The luscious harmonies of the original are reimagined with a quartet of voice ranging from baritone, tenor, alto and soprano and the arrangement blossoms with choice instrumentation of clave, juju stick, hooting owl whistle, rain stick, ukuleles and telecaster. Like the cherry on top, Sundae's lead vocals carry us away to that tropic isle.
Whether you're swiping right or chatting it up with a stranger at the bar, we romantics have a tendency to embellish that initial spark we feel when we hit it off with someone to the point of "This is true love at last!" In the song "Don't Ever Love Me" our potential partner immediately dispels any such notion or love while still being down for a night of fun. Oranda Nelson lived to be 102 year old. Her son, Randy, recalls her love of Harry Belafonte and the tune "Don't Ever Love Me" was her absolute favorite. So when Randy asked us to arrange a cover of this tune as a memorial for Oranda after her passing in 2020, we put a lot of thought into how we wanted it to sound. We were really inspired by the original version with it's lush harmonies and exotica style of the era, so we really wanted to keep that vibe while introducing an array of unique instruments and vocal arrangements. It's become one of our absolute favorites now too and we think Oranda would be proud.
